Denver, August 9. Births. Gold prospectors in the Rocky Mountain region halted mining to acknowledge the arrival of WILLA MARIE PHILLIPS at five-thirty-nine in the morning. The record-breaking gold nugget weighed eight pounds, two ounces and measured twenty-one inches in length.
Father TREVOR was magnificent in coaching Mother WENDY and Baby WILLA along in the proceedings. Also aiding and attending the birth were Certified Nurse Midwife ANNE WILLIAMS and Labor Doula FAITH McGINN.
Baby WILLA must take after her Father as her arrival was late – by four days. The adventure began mildly when Mother unknowingly went into labor while relaxing by the waterside with close friend SUSAN DOYLE. By six o’clock in the evening the event was fully underway with TREVOR and FAITH helping Mother along at home. The trio arrived at the hospital by nine o’clock. The largely un-medicated labor (the assistants did strike a vein to offer extra fluids) stalled briefly before four-thirty when an hour’s worth of pushing produced the treasured WILLA at last. Father announced the sex and cut the cord to ceremoniously welcome the wee one into the world.
Darling WILLA made her debut sporting a full head of dark hair, though there is still some debate as to whether it will be curly or straight. She was alert and calm, darting her dark blue almond-shaped eyes around the delivery room in the dawn light. Her skin was a slight golden hue, which gave cause for jaundice treatment, but she passed all of her other initial exams with high scores and proved right away to be a smart, strong eater. She marked the occasion by relieving herself on Mother before the Midwife could contain her little buns.
WILLA’s namesake, WILLIAM C. (BILL), and BONNIE O’DONOVAN of Colonial Williamsburg are the maternal grandparents, also known as GRANDPA CHIEF and GRANDMA BUNNY. LEE and JOY PHILLIPS of Lansdowne, Virginia, are the paternal grandparents, also known as GRANDDAD and ABBY. Both sets of grandparents arrived on the scene shortly after the Birth Day to assist Mother and Father in adjusting and enjoying Baby WILLA – and to help her begin to explore the Wild West. The late ANITA JOAN CECIL, also maternal grandmother and known as GRANDMA ANGEL, protects little Willa from her perch in the clouds.
Father’s sister MELINDA WATERBURY and her husband MATTHEW, and Mother’s sister ROBIN KALEY SHORTER and her husband ALLEN are Baby’s aunts and uncles. Paternal uncle LYNAM LEE PHILLIPS shines his love on Baby from heaven above. Young WILLA has six cousins with a seventh on the way.
The distinguished ETHEL TULLY, also of Colonial Williamsburg, is Great-Grandmother.
GREG LEE of Chicago, paternal second cousin, was named Godfather, and LAURA LEAR of Denver, friend to the family, was named Godmother.
LAURA and husband JOSHUA LEAR appeared at the hospital shortly after the birth to welcome WILLA and to snap the first photographs. Close friends BERNARD and NANCY WOOTEN arrived shortly thereafter with a newborn-sized birthday cake and more warm wishes. By evening the little family was recovering well as a summer thunderstorm rolled in from the mountains.
Today, the Family is snuggling at home knowing full well how lucky they are to have found instant abundant wealth in each other.
