On Motherhood

Dear Willa darling,

One day, I hope, you will become a mother yourself. And this I can tell you now, while I still have the perspective. The first days, the first weeks, even the first months can be among the darkest you’ve ever known.

Not for lack of loving you, no, mine weren’t dark for that at all. They were dark for the deepest struggle, the most cataclysmic shift, the unbridled and unwilling release of the tight control I had on my old life.

For me, even as you my little miracle, lit up my heart in tiny ways every day, I found myself in a strange fog of my own reality. At work, at social functions, even sometimes with your daddy, my best friend and soul mate, I felt like a shell of myself, an empty version of me while the real me stood outside on the sidewalk drifting away. It was the hormones, the lack of sleep, the sheer confusion over how on earth you could be mine forever.

Day by day the incredible light that you, from the day you were born, cast in the corners of my deeply dark heart grew brighter. The fog around my life broke, and the rays of glory shone in. Slowly, the sunshine returned. I can’t tell you exactly when or what happened to make it so, but sure enough happiness alighted again.

And then a magnificent thing began to happen. That light began to burst wide open. My life with you and your daddy brightened into a spectacular thing filled with insurmountable joy and surprises and miracles.

Now I clamor for time with you, with him, with us as a family. I revel in your smiles and laughter and excitement. My heart bursts with pride over your milestones and achievements, however small.

I survived the most trying and humbling period of my life and emerged on the other side a terrifically more whole version of myself than I had ever dreamed possible.

Alas, I arrived at motherhood.

And I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that it has been the most extraordinary journey of my life. I am blessed to have you.

I love you.

Momma

Willa Six Month Letter

Willa, Darling! Six months old already!

In honor of your big day, my top ten favorite Facebook postings:

10. Today at 8:22am Today is Willa's six-month birthday, Big Guy's 14th birthday and I've already heard two Grateful Dead songs on the radio this morning. It's shaping up to be a sunshiny day.

9. January 13 at 7:15am Willa's realizing she has teeth. She's moving her lips over them, making the sweetest little kissing sounds. How is it that she gets cuter and cuter every day? Is she taking lessons at night while we sleep?

8. January 4 at 8:02am Good morning, firefighters. Yes, that's right. I locked my five-month-old daughter in the running car. New mom. New car. My bad.

7. December 24, 2009 at 2:40pm I snowshoed around our 80-acre park in the diamonds-on-ice snow. I put on carols and prepped the turkey, channeling grandma and chatting with mom to give it extra goodness. Now my daughter sleeping in her swing by the pretty lit tree, and my husband out in the sunshine shoveling the walk. And I'm laying on my couch, having found this magical hour of nothing-to-do. I'm brimming with joy that this is our Christmas.

6. December 10, 2009 at 7:42am Woke up well rested and happy. Had a warm shower and got ready for my day in the quiet of dawn. Then baby pooped on me. Then baby threw up on me. How quickly we get derailed...

5. November 21, 2009 at 2:00pm Just decorated the house for Christmas then sat outside in gorgeous sunshine and lunched with Mom.

4. November 5, 2009 at 3:25pm Flying away tomorrow with little Willa, our first flight!

3. October 14, 2009 at 8:12am Baby Willa has learned to sleep eight hours straight at night. Now someone needs to teach Mommy not to wake up at 3am worried out of her mind!

2. September 16, 2009 at 6:09pm So grateful for five weeks of help with Willa. So grateful for time with just the three of us now.

1. August 11, 2009 at 3:08pm It is with spectacular joy that we announce the arrival of our baby girl Willa Marie Phillips, who arrived after a swift 12-hour natural labor on August 9, 2009, at 5:39 in the morning. She weighed in at a hefty 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measured a lengthy 21 inches. Momma, Papa and Willa are all in excellent spirits and are now cozy at home together. Hugs to all of you for your kind words, well wishes and prayers!
