Willa Six Month Letter

Willa, Darling! Six months old already!

In honor of your big day, my top ten favorite Facebook postings:

10. Today at 8:22am Today is Willa's six-month birthday, Big Guy's 14th birthday and I've already heard two Grateful Dead songs on the radio this morning. It's shaping up to be a sunshiny day.

9. January 13 at 7:15am Willa's realizing she has teeth. She's moving her lips over them, making the sweetest little kissing sounds. How is it that she gets cuter and cuter every day? Is she taking lessons at night while we sleep?

8. January 4 at 8:02am Good morning, firefighters. Yes, that's right. I locked my five-month-old daughter in the running car. New mom. New car. My bad.

7. December 24, 2009 at 2:40pm I snowshoed around our 80-acre park in the diamonds-on-ice snow. I put on carols and prepped the turkey, channeling grandma and chatting with mom to give it extra goodness. Now my daughter sleeping in her swing by the pretty lit tree, and my husband out in the sunshine shoveling the walk. And I'm laying on my couch, having found this magical hour of nothing-to-do. I'm brimming with joy that this is our Christmas.

6. December 10, 2009 at 7:42am Woke up well rested and happy. Had a warm shower and got ready for my day in the quiet of dawn. Then baby pooped on me. Then baby threw up on me. How quickly we get derailed...

5. November 21, 2009 at 2:00pm Just decorated the house for Christmas then sat outside in gorgeous sunshine and lunched with Mom.

4. November 5, 2009 at 3:25pm Flying away tomorrow with little Willa, our first flight!

3. October 14, 2009 at 8:12am Baby Willa has learned to sleep eight hours straight at night. Now someone needs to teach Mommy not to wake up at 3am worried out of her mind!

2. September 16, 2009 at 6:09pm So grateful for five weeks of help with Willa. So grateful for time with just the three of us now.

1. August 11, 2009 at 3:08pm It is with spectacular joy that we announce the arrival of our baby girl Willa Marie Phillips, who arrived after a swift 12-hour natural labor on August 9, 2009, at 5:39 in the morning. She weighed in at a hefty 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measured a lengthy 21 inches. Momma, Papa and Willa are all in excellent spirits and are now cozy at home together. Hugs to all of you for your kind words, well wishes and prayers!

Willa Five Month Letter

Dear Willa,

Happy five-month birthday, pun’kin! You have grown up so much already!

Daddy and I took you to the Bass Pro Shops great outdoor world to celebrate your big day. You had a great time sitting up like a big kid in your booster seat at lunch, and watching us play target practice in the arcade. Before we know it, you’ll be in the booth and playing right alongside us.

You laughed for the first time and sprouted two teeth this month. When I told Daddy about your teeth, he was genuinely sad. “She’s growing up too fast,” he told me. To top it all off, you learned to hold your own bottle and roll over on your tummy – all in just the past week. Fast indeed!

If only your Momma was as clever. A couple of weeks ago I locked you and the keys in the running car, prompting a visit from our local firefighters. They were very serious about getting you out quickly, although you were quite alright in there. In fact, you fell asleep! Nevertheless, they had you out in ten minutes flat. And our parent pals have assured us that all moms and dads do that at least once. In hindsight we can just laugh at our follies!

On your first Christmas Eve, I finished my work early, before you and Daddy came home, so I put on my snowshoes and treaded quietly around our 80-acre park in the diamonds-on-ice glistening snow. Then I came home and put on carols and got the turkey ready, channeling your Great Grandma Tully and chatting on the phone with your Grandma Bunny to give all the fixings extra goodness. In the afternoon you slept soundly in your swing by the pretty lit tree with packages all around, and Daddy was out in the sunshine shoveling the walk in his red sweater. I lay on the couch, having found an magical hour of nothing-to-do, reading my favorite magazine, and reveling in the fact that we're all well, and we're all happy. Really, I was brimming with joy that this was our Christmas, our lovely, lovely, lovely Christmas.

We are both just so proud of you. You get cuter, happier and smarter every day – and you fared pretty well in all three categories from the day you were born. My darling, I love you with everything that I am. May all of your hopes and dreams come true today and always.

Love,

Momma
